Ultimate Universe in the West End once again!!!

On Thursday night January 10, 2008 at the Paas Health Center in Atlanta's West End neighborhood, Ultimate Universe emerged once again to share with us interesting explorations. Kind of a continuation from the Lush Life Cafe moments where the collective began.

Mamaniji Azanyah, bassist and band leader along with Kebbie Williams on tenor saxophone and various flutes, Dashill Smith on trumpet and bass clarinet and featuring Julie Dexter on vocals took us down some familiar roads as well as some unfamiliar roads with folksy creative sounds. Missing was Kinah Boto, percussionist and Sekou Alaje percussionist who will also appear from time to time. Initially they were missed but in the spirit of Ultimate Universe the journey must continue. A trait of well seasoned musicians who have a special chemistry with one another is their ability to bend and adjust with the moments that are presented to them. This is certainly evidenced with Ultimate Universe.

As the music poured forth they were able to tackle the journey with the spirits of their missing comrades and take us to some interesting places. Julie's a natural fit with this band. It's interesting to see how she's able to add lyrics over the free expression of Kebbie, Dash and Mamaniji not taking anything away just enhancing the way she so skillfully does. Check out the clip below. It features Mamaniji conveying the message with thoughtful fingers and everyone else responding. In this clip Julie's voice is part of the instrumentation that responds to the messenger. A some-what call and response moment.
