"The drum cannot be silenced..."
Had the opportunity to capture Sekou Alajae and company perform last night and after that experience I walked away once again with a phrase that's constant in my mind: "The drum cannot be silenced..." Three conga drums, a shakere, and other percussion along with a dancer, tenor saxophone and trumpet players just doesn't get any better than that. They performed about three numbers, one with a focus on Haiti, one with a focus on West Africa and the othe with a focus on Cuba and central in them all was some of the best hand drumming I've experienced in some time. An instinctual, spiritual, magical thing happens when I capture rhythms that resonate with my soul. A kind of indwelling of the spirit happens. It's as though I'm a part of the whole experience and indeed that's what happens. I remember a distinct moment when I was capturing the drums and without any thought I moved to another part of the room when within seconds the female dancer moved into dance. Had I stayed where I was I would have missed her passionate entrance. That was one of those being at one with what was happening, thus resonating with the experience.
